What is THCJD? What are its effects and how does it differ from other cannabinoids?

What is THCJD?

THCJD (also spelled THC-JD, THCjd), known as tetrahydrocannabidiol, is a cannabinoid said to occur naturally in the cannabis plant, but only in trace amounts. Extracting directly from the plant is difficult and expensive, so THCJD, like some other compounds like HHC or THCP, is produced by a chemical reaction called isomerization from more readily available precursors like CBD.

In the lab, scientists first extract an isolated CBD from industrial hemp and then create a reaction with catalysts to rearrange the molecules and turn it into THCJD. Cannabinoids produced in this way are referred to as semi-synthetics.

Interesting fact: According to some sources, THCJD is just another name for an isomer identified as early as 1941, which is called THC-Octyl, delta 8-THC-C8, and is also referred to in scientific papers as the synthetic cannabinoid JWH – 138. If this is true and it is indeed the same substance, we can only speculate why the cannabis industry renamed this compound ‘THCJD’.

What is the structure of THCJD?

THCJD is a homologue of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC (delta-9-THC). Homologs are compounds of the same type with similar chemical structure and properties.

THCJD differs from THC in the length of the alkyl side chain. While delta-9-THC has a side chain consisting of 5 carbon atoms, THCJD has eight. The longer the chain, the more potent the cannabinoid, meaning THCJD could be even more potent than THC.

What are the effects of THCJD?

As with all new cannabinoids they tend to have minimal studies. Likewise with THCJD there are still no scientific studies on this compound. Thus, the evaluation of the effects is mainly based on the experience of the users themselves.

THCJD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, specifically the CB1 and CB2 receptors, thereby affecting the body and mind. This compound is likely to have very strong psychoactive properties, meaning it can alter perception, mood, or behavior. It appears that THCJD could also induce a feeling of euphoria or relaxation. Results usually last 2-4 hours.

Side effects of THCJD

There are, of course, side effects associated with these types of psychoactive substances. As with THC, HHC, or THCP, the following may occur at high doses:

  • Dry mouth
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Impaired orientation
  • Increased heart rate
  • Memory problems
  • Stress

The intensity of these effects varies depending on the dose, consumption method, metabolism and sensitivity of the user. Other unpleasant side effects that were not previously detected are likely to occur.

Available Products

On the market today you can already find THCJD disposable e-cigarettes, cartridges, gummies, tinctures, flowers and essences. These products come in different concentrations and flavors and are often fortified with other THC derivatives such as THCP, THCH or THCA. Although most sellers ensure that the THC content of these products meets the legal limit of 0.3%, it is reportedly a very powerful psychoactive cannabinoid, the effects of which we do not know much about, and users should be careful of who supply the products in question.

Conclusions

THCJD (tetrahydrocannabidiol) is a newcomer to the market. It is a psychoactive cannabinoid that has a similar structure to THC, but its effects are likely more intense due to its extended alkyl chain. THCJD is produced from isolated CBD.

THCJD products should be approached with caution and users should consider all risks before purchasing. There are no scientific studies that have evaluated the safety of this cannabinoid.

Always choose reliable and verified suppliers who have tested their products by an independent laboratory. Also remember that although many manufacturers are careful to comply with legal limits for THC content, THCJD is a very potent cannabinoid.
